What is a four beat lateral gait?
Left rear, left front, right rear, right front. The rear foot meets the ground in a fraction of a second before the front foot. The sound of the foot-fall is 1 - 2 - 3 - 4, all evenly executed. The back and loins of the paso fino absorb the motion of the horse. Thus, jarring is eliminated and consequently the rider has virtually no up-down movement.
